The GRT Group of Hotels Temple Tour: Regency Kancheepuram by GRT Hotels
What is the first thought that pops into your mind when Kancheerpuram is mentioned? We bet you think of the gorgeous handwoven silk sarees the city is famous for. The elegant zari, vibrant colour combinations, and exquisite craftsmanship deserve every bit of praise and envy that they receive. But did you know that the city Kanchipuram is also home to the famous Kailasanathar Temple?
The Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple has a rich history by virtue of it being Kancheepuram’s oldest structure. Its architecture has a visible Dravidian influence, as evidenced by the high gopura or gatehouse that are unique to this style of architecture.
Each year a nine-day festival called Brahmotsavam is celebrated by the temple in honour of Sri Varadharaja Swami. Brahmotsavam is not just a temple ritual, but a big festival for the entire town. On each of the nine days, the deity appears in different costumes and uses a different vahana (mount) to offer devotees an opportunity to see the image of the deity. The awe-inspiring Brahmotsayam procession attracts thousands of devotees every year during this month. The day that the deity appears using an eagle as his vahana is known as Guru Sevai and is considered particularly auspicious.
The streets come alive during this time at Kanchipuram and it is quite an adventure to explore the bustling by-lanes. Located just ten minutes away from the temple, and in the thick of the action, is Regency Kanchipuram by GRT Hotels. After a day spent seeking out the perfect saree, or gazing at the glorious architecture of this temple town, travellers can return to cozy, modern rooms and a delicious meal at Dakshin, our multi-cuisine restaurant that serves authentic and delicious Indian and Continental delicacies. For guests who like to unwind with a drink, our in-house bar Cellar offers a wide range of Indian and International labels. Need we say more?
So come by and pay us a visit if you’d like to explore the historic city of Kancheerpuram. We look forward to seeing you soon!
